    Itinerary in Zanzibar

    BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Everything you need to know before travelling to Zanzibar

Zanzibar's international airport is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), located just a few kilometres from Stone Town.

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so Tanzania's entry and visa requirements apply. Depending on your nationality, you may need to obtain a tourist visa. We recommend applying online in advance through the official Tanzanian immigration website and always checking the latest entry requirements before travelling. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. Zanzibar visa →

All foreign visitors travelling to Zanzibar are required to purchase Zanzibar's mandatory travel insurance before arrival, regardless of whether they already have international travel insurance. In addition, we recommend taking out comprehensive personal medical and travel insurance with adequate cover for the entire duration of your stay. Zanzibar mandatory insurance →

Before travelling to Zanzibar, we recommend consulting an international travel health clinic for personalised advice based on your country of origin and travel itinerary. It is also advisable to bring mosquito repellent and a small personal first-aid kit.

The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), although US dollars are widely used within the tourism sector. ATMs and forex bureaux are available in Stone Town and the main tourist areas. Many hotels and establishments accept card payments, although we recommend always carrying some cash for small shops, markets, tips and personal expenses.

The official languages are Swahili and English. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas, while learning a few basic words in Swahili is a lovely way to connect with the local culture.

Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate throughout most of the year, with warm temperatures and high humidity. We recommend bringing light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and comfortable footwear. Away from beaches and hotels, particularly in Stone Town and local communities, it is important to dress respectfully in keeping with the island's predominantly Muslim culture, covering your shoulders and knees.

Zanzibar is home to exceptionally rich yet fragile marine ecosystems. It is essential to use ocean- and reef-friendly sunscreen and always follow your guides' instructions during snorkelling and other marine activities.

Zanzibar is one of the Indian Ocean's leading tourist destinations and welcomes international travellers throughout the year. We work with trusted local drivers, guides and suppliers and closely monitor any developments that could affect your trip. As with any destination, we recommend taking the usual precautions with personal belongings and following the advice of our local teams.
